The Solar Studios at Rice University are solar powered converted shipping containers that host environmental art projects. Solar panels collect energy by day, which can be used to power video projections on the side of the containers. They are run by the Center for Environmental Studies.
I released my Sea of Oil book at the Solar Studios in December 2019, alongside an exhibition of video and objects contributed by project participants. Book contributors, funders, and environmental studies minor students from Rice were invited to the reception and book release, hosted by the newly renamed Center for Environmental Studies.
All of the objects on display in the exhibition were contributed or lent to the project by participants, many of whom work in the oil and gas industries, or are environmental activists.
