take me there, a field guide to crowd formations of manhattan and the bronx is a self guided tour available as a printable PDF and lists seven locations where crowd formations predictably occur.
I began photographing places in cities where passerby create temporary lines or circles, or crowds often form, in 2003. Over time, I realized that these formations are predictable, determined by the architecture of each urban street space and cultural norms. For example, in Manhattan, one can go downtown on a weekday in the late afternoon to Trinity Place and see commuters forming a perfectly spaced line as they wait for express buses (location 2).
Below are original photographs I took of some of these places and also video footage shot of other sites later in 2008.
